WebPosition 4 was released by WebTrends on Monday, September 12. WebPosition is Windows software that performs several functions to help you in search engine optimization (SEO). As a long-time user of WebPosition, I was eager to see what is new in the various modules that make up the product:
Reporter. Performs searches of the search engines you select to determine your site's position in rankings for various keywords. I do this every month or so to see if I am going up or down in the rankings. Version 4 includes a number of graphs instead of bare numbers. Graphs show ranking for keywords over time, for example, a quick, visual way to assess trends, a big improvement over Version 3. Not only users can quickly grasp what's going on, but clients of web design and SEO companies that use WebPosition can, too. Version 4 has also added a number of new search engines that can be tracked with WebPosition, particularly useful for international users.
Page Builder. I don't recommend use of this module. It was originally designed to build doorway webpages focused on particular keywords and tuned to particular search engines. Doorway pages are now considered spamming.
Submitter. This module has limited usefulness -- perhaps good when you are first submitting a new website or for pages that don't appear in a search engine's index. Don't pester search engines with resubmission.
Version 4 provides closer integration with WebTrends Analytics -- the reason WebTrends acquired WebPosition in the first place. If you use WebTrends, this gives you great integration between your website analytics and your search engine rankings.
